  1. Hi there – do you do turntable repairs? I have a technics SL B3 and it seems to be stuck on the “on” position when connected to power. If not can you please recommend me a repairer in the greater Geelong area? Thanks! Maryanne

    1. Yes Maryanne, I’s likely to be a contact that needs cleaning or re-aligning. Bring it in and I will work it out. Regards, Ken

  2. I have some very long stereo speaker cables which I would like shortening and fitting with RCA connectors to the shortened cables. Do you provide this kind of service?

    1. Yes Richard, Bring your speaker cables in. RCA connectors are unusual on speaker cables. If you’re not sure, bring the connector take a picture on your phone and I’ll make sure it’s right. Regards, Ken.

  3. Hi guys, does your Yamaha NP-S303 come in Silver? Thanks

    1. Hi Stew, Yes it does. But it’s $699 in silver so I didn’t add it to the listing. I only have black stock on special.

  4. Hi do you guys service and repair hi fi receivers? I have a NAD 7155 from 1985 that needs a service and maybe some repair work done, thanks!

    Jamie

    1. Sorry Jamie, I can’t help. Try Central Appliance Service on 52221418 or Andy G Electronics on 52150460. 33 years is about how long your 7155 should have lasted. If it’s anything more than ‘something simple’ you might consider the excellent Yamaha RN602 to replace it. It is a superb sounding receiver with up-to-date connectivity. https://sbhifi.com.au/?product=yamaha-r-n602-stereo-musiccast-receiver

  5. hi can I get a price on Yamaha ttn503 vinyl 500 turntable , if so when will it be in stock.
    Thankyou

  6. Is it still possible to buy a Hi-Fi component, audio cassette deck?

    1. No Pierce, I have not seen a brand-new cassette deck for more than a decade. The rubber components, that cassette decks rely on to operate, has a shelf-life of about 20 years. The best way to play tapes now is to buy a used high-end model and have it serviced; like this one https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Yamaha-K-1020-3-Head-Stereo-Cassette-Deck-Silver-Needs-Repair-240V/283306926789?hash=item41f668a2c5:g:CZUAAOSw5wJcFygg:rk:6:pf:0#viTabs_0 . Parts and labour would cost $400-500 which, combined with the purchase price, is still excellent value for money. The K1020 was over $1000 30 years ago! Or this is an entry level model looks like it has already been serviced (because it wouldn’t be working anymore otherwise) and it’s not expensive at all: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Yamaha-Natural-Sound-Stereo-Cassette-Deck-KX-330-Remote-Tested-Working/254020049493?hash=item3b24c65a55:g:h5UAAOSwg-tcDh9d:rk:7:pf:0 . Hope that helps.

  7. Hi guys
Just wondering if you do turntable repairs? I have an old Demon DP-1200 that needs some tlc. It has issues with variance in speed (apparently commonplace with this model?), and also a connectivity issue with the RCA cables.

    1. Hi Chris,
      Thank you for your inquiry.
      Yes. Bring your turntable in.
I can work on any alignment, signal and mechanical issues and clean speed control pots. If that doesn’t fix it, I can send your electronics off to be re-capped – I can’t do electrical repairs myself.
When you get it back, all will be well in your vinyl world again.
      Cheers, Ken. 5221 6011

      1. Thanks heaps Ken. The ‘cleaned up’ DP-1200 is working an absolute treat. Very happy customer!

  8. GOOGLE REVIEW: Ken came to our house at short notice last Saturday and provided extremely professional, courteous, efficient and knowledgeable service in getting our music system operational following our move from Melbourne. He has also assisted in facilitating further assistance for work outside the realm of what he does which we greatly appreciate.

We consider Ken displays the type of customer service we all long for – but unfortunately don’t always receive.

  9. GOOGLE REVIEW: Ken is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about all things HiFi.
Not only did he help me tailor a system that allowed me to get the best possible result for my budget. He also had the patience to spend a good 3 hours showing me countless speaker and amplifier combos while teaching me about the benefits of various systems and designs.
An enjoyable afternoon and one of the best retail experiences I’ve had in ages.

  10. GOOGLE REVIEW: Glad to have had the pleasure of being introduced to Steve Bennett Hi-Fi after they were recommended to me by a friend. Ken was incredibly helpful in answering any queries I had with in-depth and informative answers, and in addition, also helped point me in the right direction whenever he could.

I can’t thank Ken enough for sharing some of his insight in Hi-Fi with me, and my experience with the store can certainly attest to reviews from others that he is a wealth of knowledge. It’s incredibly easy to tell that Ken is someone with a strong, genuine passion for this field, and will help wherever he can. Certainly refreshing to experience after experiencing so many other stores who have a bias behind informing consumers on products only to benefit themselves and their sales rather than to benefit and educate the consumer. Thank you for the positive experience and I will definitely be returning!

  11. GOOGLE REVIEW: Want to get your latest sound gear. You really have to talk to Ken. A wealth of knowledge and just down to earth.

  12. GOOGLE REVIEW: Phoned them up for some information and Ken couldn’t have been more helpful – can’t recommend enough!

  13. Sorry Joel, I can’t do anything electronic. Maybe try Music Workshop or Bishop Audio & Lighting

  14. Hi ,I have a meridian 506 CD player that has some issues reading cds can you help
    Regards pat

    1. Hi Pat, I have a very good technician in Melbourne that can take a look at it – no one in Geelong these days. At the 506’s age it could be the laser or leaky capacitors. It looks like after-market laser mechs for your CD player are still available. I expect that the cost will be around $500, maybe more, he’ll quote me if is and just fix it if it’s less. It’s too good a CD player to sit there unable to play CDs… Cheers, Ken

  15. Hi hi
just been at the primare site and have seen that the np5 Prisma streamer will be up for sale some time next month.
Seems like there is an nice offering in the wind with regard to the update program. I’m a happy little owner of an I32 with the MM30 card.
Although I didn’t purchase my amp from you guys, I bought the unit from Audio Trends in Heathmont however, they don’t handle Primare anymore. So I was just wondering if you guys are going to be in on the update program. I can’t seem to find my original invoice but there is no issues with the original serial number. Looking forward to your reply
    Cheers
    Vince
Sounds like the NP5 is going to be a cute little unit with all the little niceties and more.

    1. Thanks Vince, We will be involved with Primare’s update program as soon as they ship (product is ready, just waiting for certification). We are really looking forward to the NP5. Connected to a Primare DAC, or any DACfor that matter, Prisma is proving to be a very versatile and terrific-sounding platform. Check out John Darko’s interview with Primare’s Terry Medalen: https://youtu.be/ctRvF8brjTg . I’ll get in touck when some product arrives. Cheers, Ken

    2. Hey Vince, Primare NP5s landed today. Call me on (03) 5221 6011 with your I32 serial number and credit card and I will ship you one for $449 ($990rrp) tonight. Cheers, Ken

  16. Sorry Steven,

No. I don’t think we sold this range of infinity. The ones I remember had a polycell tweeter. Perhaps Speakerbits in Port Melbourne or Queensland Speaker Repairs will be able to rebuild yours. The make 2 copies of the voice-coil in your ‘good’ tweeter and replace both of them so that they’re identical. Or scour the US eBay listings. They’re sure to come up eventually. Good luck, Ken

  17. I would just to thank you at Steve Bennett for coming out to solve the problem I had with one of my Vienna Acoustics speakers and general service of my stereo unit you gave at no cost !!!!! You really run a professional outfit and it is was a real pleasure to have dealt with you. I bought the Vincent system from your shop in 2013 and have never had any problems with it in the past and to have a free service was totally unexpected but much appreciated. Thank you very much for your help. A professional organisation who I would recommend to any future buyers. Very best wishes and many thanks once again. You have restored my faith in mankind. Best wishes for the future, Mark Mrowiec.

  18. Hi, looking for a service/repair of a akai ap-206c. Getting some annoying feedback and hum. Can you help?

    1. Yes Ben, Bring it in and we’ll take a look at it.

  19. Hey Steve,

I bought a pair of Bang & Olufsen Beovox MC120.2 passive speakers from you about a year or so ago. I’m thinking I’ll need to change over to a better amp to get better sound out of them. Current amp I’m using is a TEAC JC-85 system, with the following specs:

Output power: 50w RMS (8 ohms)
    Frequency Response: 20Hz ~ 60KHz
    T.H.D: 0.2% (1KHz)

CD Sensitivity / Impedance: 230mVK Ohm
    Phone Sensitivity / Impedance: 4.5mV / 47K Ohm

    S/N Ratio (IHF.A)
    Phono: 65 dB
    CD Video: 83 dB

Would love some advice about what I might want to look at in terms of pairing a new amp with the speakers, and whether or not the current amp I’m using would be compromising the sound at all.

    Thanks,
    Alex.

    1. Alex,

Apologies for the delayed answer. I remember those speakers. They were a terrific design – so far ahead of their time. Your TEAC amplifier was well regarded in its day, but a new Rotel A11 would be a decent upgrade. It has 85% less distortion (0.03%, 85dB phono signal-t0-noise ratio) than the TEAC which will make your music come to life on those speakers. The TEAC will sound ‘flat’ by comparison. Take a look at http://www.rotel.com/node/5664. Cheers, Ken.

  20. Hi there,

I have a Technics SA-8500X that i know very little about. The channels aren’t working too good and I’m wondering if you do receiver amp repairs/services?

    Cheeers,
    Taylor.

    1. Taylor, Your technics is so far past its service life that any ‘repair’ (locating and replacing a broken component) becomes an expensive ‘restoration’ project instead. Rob at RVHiFi does terrific restoration work. https://www.rvhifi.com.au/. A cheaper option would be a new Yamaha R-N602 (for $849 at the moment) https://sbhifi.com.au/product/yamaha-r-n602-stereo-musiccast-receiver/.

  21. Hi Ken,
I have a Pioneer VSX-D307 reciever that req attention, is this something you’d look at?
    Andy

    1. No Andy, Try Pioneer customer support https://www.pioneer.com.au/contact-us/ for where to send it to. CHeers, Ken

  22. Hi guys im looking at upgrading my surround system which is currently all Jamo and a Marantz amp, now do you do trade in its all in top condition and working subb hasnt been used at all really anyway i look forward to hearing back from you Ashley,

    1. I might be able to help in December Ashley,
Yamaha’s 2020 range was interrupted by closures in Malaysia earlier this year. The full lineup is expected to be available in December. Until then, I have some entry-level models and high-end Anthem products available.
      Cheers, Ken

  23. Hi can you replace the green jack on a computer speaker? If yes how much and a time frame please.
    Thanks

    1. Sorry Melissa, no. Best to contact the people you purchased the speakers from or google the manufacturer’s customer support line.

  24. Do you buff and repair scratched discs?

    1. Sorry Al, no. There are quite a few videos on youtube as to how to do this. I think you can get the products from ResiPlex in Douro Street, North Geelong.

  25. Hi . Do you do repairs to Bose Lifestyle model AV18 Media Center.
Have checked all connections appear ok. Nothing lights up. No power.

    1. Alan, Thanks for your message. We’re happy to provide service for anything that was purchased at Steve Bennett Hi-Fi. For Bose, I would contact their tech support team: https://www.bose.com.au/en_au/contact_us.html

  26. Hi!
Our little Philips CD/Radio with L&R speakers ahs just died.
Is there a chance that a Yamaha MCRB043D or similar is likely to be in stock?
    Any suggestions welcomed.

    Ted

    1. Ted, Thanks for your email. Sorry, Yamaha is out of stock of MCRB043. They do have a couple of TSXB237 all-in-one units in black for $549. I can order one of them for you (https://au.yamaha.com/en/products/audio_visual/bluetooth_speakers/tsx-b237/index.html). Or Ruark has a more sophisticated all-in-one with wi-fi radio (it doesn’t rely on local radio reception) and streaming capabilities. The brand new R3 is $1299 in soft grey or walnut veneer (https://www.ruarkaudio.com/products/r3-compact-music-system).

  27. Can you ship two stylus brushes to me in Auckland N Zealand? Zane

    1. Sorry Zane, Australian sales only. Try https://www.interdyn.co.nz/ Cheers, Ken

  28. Hi Ken,
I have an Anthem MRX700 that I have dugout that is having some issues, all the speaker outputs are at a lower volume except for the FL. It sound suspiciously similar to this thread in a forum:
    https://forums.tomsguide.com/threads/half-channels-from-anthem-mrx-700-receiver-at-low-volume-how-to-troubleshoot-fix.468373/
Can you suggest a place to get this repaired who knows Anthem equipment and might be able to get me a new remote? I live in Ballarat.

    1. Rhys, I use at Filatronics for Anthem repairs. Jim is brilliant. He is the warranty service agent so he will have seen just about anything that goes wrong with ANthems before.

  29. Hi there Ken

Does the ProJect Carbon have built in phono stage? If not, what would you recoomend?

    1. Pro-Ject Carbon EVO doesn’t have inbuilt phono preamp. The T1 ($599) is excellent. The Debut Carbon Recordmaster HiRes ($1080) produces better sound quality and better recordings. Having said that, the T1’s no slouch! I gave one to a friend of mine for his 50th last year, and he is absolutely rapt. It sounds much better than any other music source in his system.

  30. Hi Ken,
I have a Yamaha RX-V3800 and it won’t power on anymore is there anyone in Geelong who may be able to fix it?
    Thanks Jamie.

    1. Hi Jamie, Happy New YEar. Bring it in and I’ll get it fixed for you.

  31. Hi, I have a Electrocompaniet power amp that has just started to blow fuses; can you recommend/suggest a competent reliable technician in the Geelong area, thanks in advance.

    1. Peter, I would send Electrocompaniet repairs to Audio Dynamics in Kew (ph 9882 0372). You can pack it and send it with Josies Transport or Interparcel.

  32. Hi There Ken
I have a B&W ASW 600 sub-woofer that does not seem to power on anymore. Is that something you can fix?
    Thanks Mark

    1. Hi Mark,

Did you buy it here? If so, bring it in and I will arrange to get it repaired (although B&W aren’t as ‘supportive’ as they once were).

Otherwise you can contact B&W and find out where to send it (in Melbourne) for service:
Bowers & Wilkins Australia Pty Ltd
      Suite 303, 754 Pacific Highway
      Chatswood
      New South Wales
      2067
      Australia
      Tel: +61 (2) 9196 8990
      Email: [email protected]

      Cheers,
      Ken Bennett

  33. Hi, I have a Project Carbon Debut that needs a repair. The phono box was damaged so I took it off it and ordered a new one. Now the new one just needs to be connected with a soldering iron. Is this something you do?

    Thank you

    1. Yes Kane, I speak fluent ‘Pro-Ject.’ Bring it in. CHeers, Ken

  34. Hi mate, I have a JBL Sb300 soundbar and a JBL SB400 soundbar that are both playing up. The 300 needs a new optical input put in and the 400 is just not producing sound.. Can i bring them in for you to look at? Cheers

    1. Sorry Jamie, You’ll need to contact the people that you bought it from or JBL themselves at https://www.jbl.com.au/support-contact.html
Or, better still, ditch it altogether and buy a decent surround receiver and a pair of speakers. Yamaha RX-V4A and Monitor Audio Bronze100 costs less than $2000 and sound better (and more serviceable) than any soundbar available today. Cheers, Ken

  35. hi Steve – I have an early – mid 1980s TEAC PD-56 compact disc player inherited from an uncle, who took great joy in music through top systems.
this player has (over the last 12 months) developed a sticky cd entry door ; after pressing the open button you hear it trying to auto-open but it needs to be pried partially for cd entry. then when sliding back for play, it needs to be pushed into place for cd play take up.

also, the beastie is becoming very sensitive to apparent dust and occasional skitter skipping with some cds that play fine on my less-expensive/day to day players.

I’d like to use a local repairer like you if you are prepared to have crack at smoothing out the bumps. I can drop it in at a time convenient to you, and there is no pressing need to get it properly efficient.
    many thanks – peter

    1. Peter, Thanks for your email. I can’t help. I don’t think anyone can.
The drawer problem is an easy fix, but the skipping? That’s a CD player’s way of telling you it’s time for a new one. In my experience, after about ten years old, CD player repairs continuously fail and you’re throwing good money after bad.
Take a look at the new Rotel CD11-Tribute. It’s a solidly built CD player that has been supercharged by hi-fi-legend, Ken Ishiwata. It should see you through another 35 years. Cheers, Ken.

  36. Hi Steve, I have a Pioneer turntable PL-516X that I bought in 1979, a complete Pioneer ‘tower’ system (Amp, tuner, cassette deck ,speakers) have played my vinyl records continuously. Have a problem now with sound coming out of only one cannel, have swapped the Phono jacks around then it plays through the other channel (still only one output) are you able to assist?
    Cheers
    Vic

    1. Vic, Thanks for your email. Based on your test, the problem is clearly with the turntable. If you bring it in, I can work out if it’s in the cartridge or wiring and get it going again. Ortofon cartridges start at $109. Cheers, Ken

  37. Hi, I notice on your website that you do not do hifi repairs. Do you have recommendations for anyone who does in the Geelong area?
    Cheers,
    Liam

    1. Bring anything that you purchased here, at Steve Bennett Hi-Fi, over the years and I’ll get it fixed for you. The last two repair shops in Geelong, that I know of, are Andy G Electronics and Robertsons Electronic Services.

  38. Hi. Do you sell and install Sonos systems?

    1. Sorry, Damian, Not Sonos. I do sell the Yamaha MusicCast range, which is a similar technology that’s more flexible in hi-fi and home theatre, and commercial, applications.
