An Evolution of Design and Implementation
Pro-Ject Debut Carbon EVO was to be the latest evolution of the Debut turntable but, what has arrived some twenty years after Debut Carbon DC is a significant step up in build quality and design.
- The 8.6″ carbon fibre tonearm is now a composite of aluminium and carbon-fibre, each material supporting the other to minimise vibration.
- The 12″ pressed steel platter now has a thick ring of spongy rubber-like TPE plastic to add peripheral mass and damp ringing in the metal.
- The bearings are all machined and assembled to lower tolerances.
- And, best of all, the hidden power switch now switches between 33.33 and 45rpm without removing the platter. In the past, 45rpm wasn’t a format for grown-ups but, these days, more and more album re-issues are coming out on 45rpm double-albums – which usually sound better, by the way – whilst their 33rpm versions lay in a tangle of copyright restrictions.
- The Debut motor isolation system employs more TPE plastic compound to eliminate audible noise transfer from the motor and improve speed stability.
The Debut Carbon EVO also sees a refresh of Pro-Ject’s famous colours! Not only is the Debut Carbon EVO available in the gloss black, red and white finishes but, for the same cost, you can also choose from six statement-making satin finishes: black, white, steel blue, fir green, golden yellow and (my favourite) walnut timber veneer.
Key Features:
• 8.6″ one-piece aluminium/carbon fibre tone-arm, (never found on budget turntables due to high production costs).
• High-quality cast metal counterweight – helping further reduce unwanted resonance.
• Three adjustable isolation feet.
• 12″ damped steel platter.
• Junction box installed, allowing for the easy upgrade of turntable interconnects.
• New low-noise DC power supply.
• Ortofon 2M Red ($189) moving magnet pickup cartridge included.
• NINE finishes available.
• Lid included
When Debut ‘debuted,’ twenty years ago, it was under $400 so, in 2021 at $939rrp, Pro-Ject Debut EVO isn’t a ‘cheap and cheerful’ deck anymore. Its evolution of features and performance is so far-flung, and yet Debut EVO still eminently affordable and better sounding than anything that Pro-Ject has made under $1100! If you think you can stretch from a cheaper deck, then Pro-Ject Debut Carbon EVO will reward with some of the best sound you’ll hear in its category. In terms of value for money, Debut is better then ever.
